 Hillsborough County Commission, District 7

As a candidate for the Hillsborough County Commission, District 7, I am committed to bringing greater fiscal responsibility to taxpayers through smaller, more efficient county government, while boosting job creation.

We need to take steps now to ensure a vibrant economic future for Hillsborough County and its residents, with strong leadership in economic development and by creating a climate that helps businesses thrive and expand.

A native and lifelong resident of Tampa, I am President and CEO of Beauty and Health Institute in Westchase, an occupational training school my wife, Rita, and I started in 2006. Nationally accredited by the Council on Occupational Education, the school has prepared more than 400 graduates for careers in the beauty and wellness industry locally; many, after graduating, have gone on to open their own businesses in Hillsborough County creating job growth as they hire their own staff.

Among my priorities is aiding local economy recovery by incentives to drive new jobs in construction, nanotechnology, and ending the gridlock of Hillsborough County’s traffic nightmares.

I am proposing a 24-month plan to spur construction job growth by incentivizing property improvement for homeowners, businesses and investors. The PIWA PLAN (Property Improvements Without Assessments) would allow improvements, of up to 50% of the current assessed property value, without an additional tax assessment for as long as the property remains in the owner’s name. Future owners would be responsible for the full assessed property value. It’s a mechanism for putting people back to work, while increasing property values and providing future tax revenue for Hillsborough County.

Active in the Tampa Bay community, I am proud to be serving as the 2012 event chair for American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Town N’ Country. I am a past president of the board of directors for Wheels of Success, a non-profit which provides cars to needy individuals and families. I also served on the board of directors of the Veterans Day Parade Group, which hosts the annual Tampa Bay Veterans Parade to honor military veterans for their valiant service to our country.
